Description: Garmin introduced a new line of chartplotters in 2007. All models are available with Garmin's BluChart g2 cartography preloaded, and also are able to show 3D land and bottom contours, satellite overlay, marine services, and more.

Pros: the 52xx'a have a user-friendly touch screen interface. The traditional plastic coated display has given way to a glass layered screen to reduce wear. Garmin has provided 3 ethernet ports on the back of the display, up from only 1 on first generation network products. This allows boaters with single display setups to eliminate the need for the network hub. Also, garmin has made the new display NMEA 2000 compliant and are launching there own line of NMEA 2000 products.

Cons: Garmin's traditional user interface is gone, having been replaced by a more menu-driven system. It takes a little getting used to, and some procedures now require several steps instead of the old press-and-hold method. The cooling fan can get a little noisy if it gets anything in the bearings, and Garmin generally does not consider fan noise a defect.

Bottom Line: For the budget minded-consumer, The Garmin Network Displays should be seriously considered. With the addition of Instrument displays and autopilot, Garmin is now in a position to compete with Raymarine's E-series and Furuno's NavNet vx2 systems.
